What is the difference between HVLP and conventional spray guns?

HVLP (High Volume, Low Pressure) guns limit air cap pressure to 10 psi, transferring more coating to the part and less to the air — many air quality districts require it. Conventional guns atomize at higher pressure, which handles heavy-bodied materials and faster production but wastes more material as overspray. Compliant technologies like Trans-Tech and LVMP sit between the two.

Gravity, pressure, or siphon feed — which do I need?

Gravity feed (cup on top) wastes the least material and suits refinish and small-batch work. Siphon feed (cup below) is the traditional shop setup. Pressure feed (remote tank or pump) is for production volume — it delivers any viscosity at a constant rate and keeps the gun light. If you spray more than a quart at a time, pressure feed usually wins.
