Heritage: 78 Years of Industrial Surface Finishing
The Wagner Group was founded on May 2, 1947, by Josef Wagner in Tettnang, Germany — a small company initially repairing and selling electric motors. Within a decade it had pivoted entirely. In 1953, Wagner introduced the Whisker-Champion, the first electrically operated airless spray gun for serial production, and the surface coating era of the company began. By the 1960s, Wagner had moved into contractors' airless systems. By 1969, it launched its first electrostatic powder-coating system. By 1981, the company had roughly 1,200 employees and products in more than 100 countries.
When Josef Wagner passed away in 1987, he left behind not just a global business but a structure designed to protect it: the Josef Wagner Charitable Foundation, which holds the company and ensures it cannot be acquired or dismembered. That independence has allowed Wagner to continue investing in long-cycle industrial R&D, the kind that produces genuinely new coating technology rather than incremental product refreshes.
The acquisitions that followed reflect that strategy. Wagner acquired powder-coating specialist ESB in 1991, Titan Tool in 1999, Walther Spray and Coating Systems in 2002, and C.A. Technologies in 2015 - building a portfolio that spans hand tools, industrial liquid coating, powder coating, and specialty dispensing under a single engineering organization. Today, Wagner's Industrial Solutions division, including the Wagner, Walther Pilot, and C.A. Technologies brands, is one of the world's leading suppliers of production-scale surface finishing systems.
Two Coating Platforms, One System Supplier
Wagner Industrial is unusual among coating equipment suppliers in that it engineers complete, production-ready systems for both liquid coating and powder coating, not just guns, but the full material path from container to cured film. That matters because most coating failures begin upstream of the spray gun in fluid pressure inconsistency, incorrect mixing ratios, or contaminated material delivery. Wagner's approach is to control the entire path.
On the liquid coating side, the product platform covers:
- Cobra pump family — Wagner's pneumatic high-pressure double diaphragm pump, capable of pressures up to 250 bar. The Cobra brings diaphragm pump advantages (gentle on material, lower pulsation, easier maintenance) into pressure ranges previously only achievable with piston pumps, making it the platform of choice for AirCoat and airless applications where material integrity matters.
- AirCoat application technology — Wagner's proprietary combination of high-pressure fluid delivery (up to 250 bar) with low-volume atomizing air at the tip. The result is spray rate closer to airless with finish quality closer to airspray. This is the combination that production wood furniture, cabinet, and automotive component lines use when they need both throughput and a quality surface.
- TwinControl 2K mixing systems — electronic two-component mixing and dosing for AirCoat and airless applications up to 370 bar. The TwinControl manages ratio control, flush cycles, and material changeovers electronically, reducing waste and ensuring consistent mix ratios on polyurethanes, epoxies, and other reactive coatings where ratio deviation directly affects film performance.
- TOPFINISH spray guns — manual and automatic airspray guns for precision liquid finishing, including the RobotBell high-speed rotation atomizers (20,000–80,000 RPM) for robotic application lines in automotive and appliance manufacturing.
On the powder coating side:
- Sprint 2 manual systems — Wagner's complete mobile powder coating platform, available in box feed, hopper feed (25L and 60L), and Expert touchscreen configurations. The Sprint 2 is the system job shops and production facilities use when they need reliable powder application without a fixed booth installation that can handle everything from a single-color architectural shop to a multi-color production line doing fast changeovers.
- PEM-X1 manual powder guns — 490g corona guns with 100kV cascade voltage and three selectable charging curves, available in flat spray, round spray, cup gun, and spray pack configurations. The X1 nozzle platform is shared across manual, automatic, and robot gun families with one nozzle ecosystem across the entire powder application line.
- PEA-X1 and PEA-T3 automatic guns — automatic corona and tribo guns for reciprocator applications in production lines. Corona charging uses high-voltage electrostatic attraction while Tribo charging uses friction-based charge generation without a high-voltage cascade. The choice between them depends on part geometry, Faraday cage areas, and coating chemistry.
- PER-X1 robot guns — single and twin configurations for robotic arm powder application, compatible with the same X1 nozzle family as the manual and automatic guns.
Why CET for Wagner
One thing worth stating clearly: the Wagner that CET sells is Wagner Industrial — the German-engineered production coating systems used in manufacturing, fabrication, and finishing operations. This is not the consumer Wagner brand sold through home improvement retailers. The Sprint 2 powder system, the Cobra pump, the TwinControl 2K - these are industrial tools for industrial coating problems.
CET stocks and supports Wagner's powder coating and liquid coating lines, and brings specific expertise to both:
- Powder coating system setup and support. The Sprint 2 is a complete system, but getting consistent results requires understanding gun-to-part distance, kV settings, powder flow rate, and grounding - variables that interact differently with different part geometries and powder chemistries. CET helps customers dial those settings in rather than leaving them to trial and error.
- Corona vs. tribo selection. Choosing between corona and tribo charging is a real application decision. Tribo guns outperform corona on parts with deep recesses and Faraday cage areas but require compatible powder chemistry. CET can walk through the tradeoffs for a specific application before the purchase, not after.
- Genuine OEM parts in stock. Nozzles, electrode holders, cones, injectors, cables, and wear parts for the Sprint 2 and PEM-X1 platform. These are the vital items that determine whether a powder gun applies correctly or begins throwing inconsistent patterns. We stock them so downtime is measured in hours, not weeks.
- Liquid coating system integration. For facilities running Wagner liquid coating systems - Cobra pumps, TwinControl 2K, AirCoat guns - CET provides setup support, fluid path troubleshooting, and component sourcing. Wagner's liquid systems are engineered to work together, we make sure they do.
Whether you're setting up a first powder coating operation, upgrading a liquid line to 2K AirCoat, or sourcing wear parts for an existing Wagner system - CET brings the product inventory, application knowledge, and ongoing support to keep it running.
