How to Select the Right Spray Gun for Automotive Refinish

Selecting an automotive refinish spray gun is about more than brand loyalty. Here's what to look for in basecoat, clearcoat, and primer guns.

The spray gun is the most important tool in a body shop or refinish operation. The right gun makes a perfect finish achievable; the wrong one makes it nearly impossible.

Basecoat Guns

Basecoat application demands consistent atomization and pattern width. DeVilbiss TEKNA and DV1 B are favorites for their consistent fan pattern and ease of adjustment. Binks Mach 1 also delivers excellent results.

Clearcoat Guns

Clearcoat guns must deliver a mirror-flat wet film with zero orange peel. The DeVilbiss DV1 C and TEKNA PROLITE Clearcoat are engineered specifically for this task.

Key Specs to Evaluate

Look for fluid tip size (typically 1.2–1.4mm for basecoat, 1.3–1.5mm for clearcoat), air cap type (HVLP for regulatory compliance), and ergonomics for all-day use.
